MINI MALAYSIA & MINI ASEAN CULTURAL VILLAGE

ABOUT

Mini Malaysia & Mini ASEAN Cultural Village, cover a combined area of 13.5 hectares. Located in Ayer Keroh, this unique cultural theme park displays many different cultural elements, which shows the lifestyle of the local people in the past. It is a rare opportunity for visitors to witness the whole Malaysian and ASEAN architecture and heritage in a short all-encompassing way.

It is separated into two different parks :

  • Taman Mini Malaysia
  • Taman Mini Asean

It was officially open to the public on 17 July 1986 by the 5th Prime Minister, Y.A.B Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad. Mini Malaysia Park was built to cultivate interest and knowledge among the visitors about the history, cultural heritage of each state and it's traditional architectural characteristics. The houses were replicas built in acccordance to the exact size, and design to the original traditional houses.

Inside of each house, one will find various handicrafts originating from each state or country, and the mannequins dressed according to their traditional costumes of the state. Handicrafts have long been a source of income for local people in almost every country. Although the designs and structures of the houses are similar, they are by no means identical.

There are 13 traditional houses in total, and each of them representing a state in Malaysia. Artisan from each state were hired to ensure complete authenticity of the craftsmanship. Within each house are mannequins dressed according to the traditional Malay attire of the state.

The housing style displayed here include :

  1. Perlis Long Roofed House
  2. Penang Long Roofed House
  3. Kedah Long Roofed House
  4. Perak Long Roofed House
  5. Selangor Long Roofed House
  6. Negeri Sembilan Long Roofed House
  7. Melaka Long Roofed House
  8. Johore Five Roofed House
  9. Kelantan Long Roofed House
  10. Terengganu Five Roofed House
  11. Pahang Long Roofed House
  12. Rumah Dusun Lutud (Sabah Traditional House)
  13. Rumah Panjang Sarawak (Sarawak Traditional House)

Within the same park is Mini ASEAN, a showcase of the architecture, people, customs and heritage of the countries of ASEAN (Association of South East  Asian Nations). Mini ASEAN was officiated on 3 September 1991 by Y.A.B Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad. First established, there were only five models of traditional houses, representing five members of the ASEAN countries, namely Thailand, Phillippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore. After the admission of another 4 countries into ASEAN, 4 additional traditional houses were built in 2002, representing those countries, namely Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.
